1. Pain, for your practice it is:

A myth from the past. Today tools and techniques provide totally painless treatments

A perception. Physical pain is limited and it is more anxiety that patient may experience

A key factor for my reputation. Patients forget about their treatments – not about their pain

2. The smell in my practice:

It smells clean and medical. I make sure that it reflects well on my high standard of hygiene

It could vary depending on the treatment; it is not a great concern as long as it doesn’t stink

I make sure that a relaxing smell is present at all times and I use fragrance diffusers

3. My waiting room decoration:

I leave that to my staff, I’ve never had any comments about it

Mainly magazines, product brochures and treatment information

I have posters of smiling people and images of a calming nature

4. The sound throughout my practice:

I listen to the radio with a balance of music and news

There is classical or lounge music playing to help relaxing

No music: I don’t want to be distracted in my work and patients don’t seem to care

5. My staff and pain management:

They are fully briefed and they can hold the patient’s hand if need be

When the patient is in the chair, I am the only one in charge and I personally deal with it

Essential: It’s a team effort from the moment the patient enters the practice until he or she leaves

6. Before the patient sits in the chair:

I am not really involved. My assistant manages the setup

I explain to the patient the different technical aspects of the treatment

I check the patient’s stress level and act accordingly. Empathy is key in this line of work

7. My behavior when the patient expresses pain or fear of pain:

I explain that it will not hurt after the anesthetic injection - Just the prick of the needle

If I can, I stop what I am doing, listen to what the patient says and react accordingly

Sometimes it is better to carry on as the pain will be gone if I can finish the treatment quickly

8. Pain management post intervention:

I always prescribe an anti-antalgic to be on the safe side

I tell the patient that if it still hurts tomorrow, they can come back for a contro

I call my patients to check how they are doing systematically after an important surgery i.e. Implants

9. My patients:

I am lucky, most of them are not anxious and they do not mind some low discomfort level

Generally fine, there are always some more difficult to deal with: those you waste time with

Are sometimes stressed. They don’t say anything but I can tell: Sweaty hands don’t lie

10. How do you monitor pain and stress level:

A simple code: when in pain my patient raises one hand and I react accordingly

Generally I don’t. I just want to get done with the treatment, for the patient’s sake!

I do or I don’t. It is really down to who is sitting in my chair and his or her past behavior

11. When you need to inject a local anesthetic:

I follow the same routine whoever the patient

I always use a topical anesthetic gel to avoid the prick of the needle uncomfortable sensation

I hide the syringe and act fast so the patient has no time to be anxious
